Connecticut Real Estate Closings Require A Licensed Attorney

Connecticut recently enacted Public Act 19-88 (the “Act”) with the purpose of ensuring individuals involved in real estate transactions obtain legal advice from licensed attorneys. The Act prohibits (1) persons other than attorneys admitted in the state from representing the legal interests of parties to real estate closings concerning real property in the state, and (2) mortgage lenders from inducing or requiring prospective mortgagors to use preferred attorneys or law firms to close loan transactions.

The Act becomes effective on October 1, 2019.
