On March 11, 2024, the White House announced that U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (“HUD”) Secretary Marcia L. Fudge will be stepping down from her position at the end of the month, with her last day being March 22. She has served in the current administration for the last three years as a Cabinet secretary, leading HUD during a turbulent time in the housing industry. Fudge, who is 71, will be retiring from public service after nearly five decades and plans to return to Ohio where she previously served as both a Mayor and Congresswoman.
“From her time as a mayor, to her years as a fierce advocate in the U.S. House of Representatives, Marcia’s vision, passion, and focus on increasing economic opportunity have been assets to our country. I’m grateful for all of her contributions toward a housing system that works for all Americans, and I wish her well in her next chapter,” President Joe Biden wrote in a statement regarding her departure from her Cabinet position.
Fudge issued a statement on the HUD website to announce her resignation, and also highlighted some of the work that the agency was able to accomplish during her tenure with HUD, such as reducing mortgage insurance premiums for FHA mortgages, and funding 2 million units of public housing and multifamily housing. “It has always been my belief that government can and should work for the people. For the last three years, I have fully embraced HUD’s mission to create strong sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all,” Fudge said in her statement. “The people HUD serves are those who are often left out and left behind. These are my people. They serve as my motivation for everything we have been able to accomplish.”
Upon her departure from HUD, Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman will serve as acting secretary until a replacement is selected by the President and confirmed into office.
