The U.S. Senate voted on September 30, 2021, to confirm Rohit Chopra as the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (“CFPB”) Director. Chopra’s nomination was approved in a close 50-48 party line vote before the full senate. He is the third permanent director of the CFPB since it was created by the Dodd-Frank Act in 2010 and began operation in 2011.
Chopra previously worked for the CFPB when it was founded and held high-ranking positions such as being the first student loan ombudsman before leaving to fill a Democratic seat on the Federal Trade Commission in 2018.
President Biden appointed Dave Uejio, previously the CFPB’s Chief Strategy Officer, to the position of Acting Director pending the confirmation of Chopra as the permanent director. Uejio has overseen the CFPB for the past eight months after the previous director, Kathy Kraninger, announced her resignation following President Biden being sworn into office in January 2021.
